We’re talking Harry Potter specifially for this week’s 5 Fandom Friday. We mentioned somewhere before that there are many objects from J.K. Rowling’s world that we would love to own, but we haven’t talked about the spells we think are the most useful. Which is why we’re doing it now. Ladies and Gentlemen, we give you: 5 Spells That Would Come In Handy In Real Life.

1. Protego

Gotta protect yourself against as much as possible, right? I’d venture this is one of the most useful spells in the wizarding world, especially if you’re at war – or have to defend your honor in a duel. You never know.

2. Expecto Patronum

Who isn’t curious about what their Patronus might look like? Although they’re not just pretty white animals. They’re quite useful, even if you’re not fighting off dementors. They’ve been known to be used for communication, for once. Or maybe you just find yourself in a time in your life where you would like to remind yourself that you are strong enough to hold some powerful good memories long enough to create a Patronus. Or, you know, you might have to fight off dementors. Then it’s a pretty good spell to know, too.

3. Accio

Not just for all the times you’re too lazy to get up and grab something, but mostly for all the times you can’t find something. Just wave your wand and *magic happens* whatever you’ve lost comes flying back to you from wherever it was hiding! How awesome would that be? No more looking for your keys or your glasses or your phone. The only problem I see with this spell is that should you misplace your wand, there’s no way around a nice all-around clean up to find it.

4. Expelliarmus

I think the seven books J.K. Rowling gave us are sufficient evidence that sometimes, all you need is the power to disarm your enemy to save yourself and/or the world.

5. Lumos

As Dumbledore said: “Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.” Lumos might come in handy when you can’t find the light switch, too. Or if you find yourself in a really dark place where there is no light, for whatever reason. Or if there’s a power outage. Or if you want to read a book in the dark without turning on the light. So easy a spell, so numerous the possibilities. Isn’t it awesome?

 

Honorary mention: a cleaning spell. One flick of you wand, and your whole place is tidy and clean and everything is at its place. Isn’t that the dream?
